Tampa Bypass Canal Race Site Information

DIRECTIONS TO RACE COURSE: (see map) ( photo)
The Tampa Bypass Canal lies about 8 miles east of the center of Tampa's downtown distict. From Interstate 4 (just west of the Interstate 75 interchange heading towards Tampa from Orlando), take Hwy. 301 North (exit 7 - formerly exit 6). It is worded "Hillborough Ave. - U.S. 92 to Hwy. 301 North".  Drive north about 1 mile past the truck stop, past a traffic light to the entrance gate on the right just before the canal bridge. On the right, look for VP's Bar-B-Que and a sign reading Tampa Bypass Canal / Harney Canal Boat Ramp. There is an exit lane on the right for the boat ramp parking lot (for boat trailers only - see parking below). Cars and buses proceed to parking on the other side of the canal bridge. If you have never been there, there are no food facilities on site besides the barbecue restaurant, but there are port-o-lets. It can be hot, but it is a nice grassy park setting and an excellent and fair race course.

PARKING:
The organizing committee will direct parking. There will be a donation of $3 to park for all of the cars except coach's private vehicles. The entrance to the site has been transformed into a paved parking lot with a public boat ramp, managed by the Hillsborough Parks & Recreation Department.  Under the direction of the regatta parking supervisor, vehicles pulling boat trailers will be directed through the parking lot into the main field behind it. Vehicles with valid handicap tags will be directed to park in the paved parking lot or in the grassy field nearest the entrance. ALL OTHERS (CARS AND BUSES) PLEASE PROCEED OVER THE CANAL BRIDGE TO THE NEXT PARKING AREA. Don't be the cause of a traffic jam by going into the wrong parking area.

If the main field is not wet from rain the previous week, there may be some parking available in the grassy field nearest the entrance for coach's vehicles ONLY. Two vehicle passes will be allocated to each program.  These passes will allow parking behind the trailer area.  If we have a heavy rain Friday, vehicle passes may be withheld in order to prevent damage to the field Saturday. The majority of vehicles will be parked across the canal at the Southwest Water Management District offices, so be prepared to carry your coolers, chairs, and anything else you need.  You may like to bring a small wagon, if you have one.

VOLUNTEER EFFORTS:
This is an association event.  We absolutely need members to assist in running the regatta. SEE Launches and Stake Boats below.

PLEASE TAKE ALL TRASH TO THE DUMPSTER.
We expect each organization to be responsible for thorough cleanup of their camp.  There will be a large dumpster at the edge of the paved parking area and we need ALL bagged trash, wet socks, everything left behind to go into the dumpster.

PRACTICE:
Race organizers plan to be on site on Friday prior to race (Around 12:00 pm).  The course will be open for practice, but the floating docks may not be ready until late.  There is no security available Friday night.

SPECTATORS AND TENTS:
The number of teams participating is growing.  The organizing committee will be regulating the limited front row spaces for team tents. Please be aware that FSRA is restricting canal front tent space to 40ft per program.  Placement of tents is still on a first come, first serve basis. However, every effort should be made to accomodate as many programs as possible.  FSRA will relocate tents if necessary. OFFICIAL VEHICLES ONLY ON THE ACCESS ROAD ALONG THE COURSE.  Foot traffic and bicycles are permitted on the access road.  Coaches are not allowed to communicate with crews in any way. The location is a large open pasture which can get very muddy with rain.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
South on Hwy. 301 approx. 1/2 mile.
Baymont Inn (866) 999-1111 (813) 626-0885

CONCESSIONS:
THERE WILL BE NO FOOD CONCESSIONS ON SITE! PLEASE PLAN AHEAD!

LAUNCHES:
There is a need for more launches for course protection and officiating.  These launches should have flotation devices, a paddle, two full tanks of gas, and a driver.  Coaches are not permitted on the water.  If you can help provide a launch, please call.

STAKE BOATS:
As usual, we will need volunteers to staff the starting line stake boats.  Typically, this would be three to four shifts of seven volunteers. If you have rowers who are not rowing or who have finished rowing please allow them to be on the stake boats. There will be a sign up form at registration.  Please call Bram Fowler at 407.647.8999 days or 407.339.5067 in the evening, if your team is interested.
